Niina Timosaari’s (MA, Doctoral Student, History of Science and Ideas, Univ. of Oulu) doctoral thesis will be the first study to focus on the interplay between Westermarck’s scientific thinking and his social criticism. She analyses Westermarck’s critique of the Western legislation in relation to gender, sexuality and marriage. In particular, by examining Westermarck’s views in their social and scientific contexts, Timosaari’s study sheds light on why and how Westermarck promoted certain law reforms as well as on the reception of Westermarck’s activities among his contemporaries.

In the project, Timosaari also studies ideas related to the connections between social evolution and the status of women in the writings of Westermarck’s disciples.
